I could check libraries for access. At this point I would still be thinking it was a local disturbance (the everyone evacuated theory). I would collect food on my search for information, but over time I was discover: everything just stopped on a certain date, not only was everyone in CT and NY missing, and in the Western Hemisphere, but in the whole world (apparently). I would find a Ham radio and try to find someone on it. It would be a long time with me searching using communications and traveling for me to conclude that I was likely alone. I would still not truly believe it but would believe that a large portion of humanity had disappeared.
While running around and trying to communicate, collecting food and supplies, I would be freeing those animals left behind, zoo animals, domestic animals, pets, they would be on their own to survive, but at least I could open the doors/gates. I would probably keep a little pack of dogs for companionship and protection. The most dangerous predator (man) is gone, but dogs are good to have to discourage four legged predators.

But, it’s not - and the same intellectual hubris that was excited to “understand” the one problem prevents us from seeing that it’s not applicable to the other problem. Religion is another huge difference. The majority of people in the UK would class themselves as having no religion and those that do adhere to a religion largely keep quiet about it. This is also true (often even moreso) in most European countries. This contrasts starkly with the US which stands out as the only developed western country that has such a high degree of religiosity affecting everyday life. In the US an atheist could not hold any senior public office, whereas in the UK it is pretty much the norm. In fact, here we simply do not care whether a person follows a religion or not as long as they do their job properly and keep it to themselves. The UK police are protectors not enforcers. You can approach any police officer and ask for directions and even have a chat. This is very different in the US. It also seems to us that many, if not most US citizens have very little knowledge or understanding about anything outside the US. Only 40% of US citizens even hold a passport whereas this figure is over 80% in the UK. Europeans as a whole are far more widely traveled and more knowledgeable about world affairs. There are many other differences which I could list which would show we are more similar to our European neighbours than to the US but I have gone on long enough.
