Despite receiving orders from Hitler to attack Berlin, General Wenck disobeyed and instead led an attack southeast of the city to create a corridor for the remnants of the German Ninth Army and the many civilians trapped by the Soviets. He had heard distressing calls for help over open radio frequencies from those trapped inside the city and knew that surrendering to the Soviets was not an option. With limited resources and exhausted men, Wenck's army violently attacked the Soviets once again to create a life-saving corridor. Their non-coded radio message ensured that everyone could hear it, including the Soviets who used all their military might to destroy the corridor. The men of the 12th Army fought fiercely to hold the corridor open, allowing close to 300,000 soldiers and civilians to make it to safety. These men sacrificed their own lives for the lives of others, not for the Reich or Hitler, but for their own people. They felt a sense of loyalty, responsibility, and comradeship while trading their lives for the safety of their comrades and civilians. In contrast, the SS-Charlemagne unit fought exclusively for Hitler and did not fight for "their people" as they were not even born in Germany. They fought to the bitter end, either dying or being captured by the Allies.
