neighbors’ dogs started howling and I went to check on them). Then I would wonder where everyone in my little part of NW Connecticut went? Did I miss an evacuation?
Ok then I would start to seriously try to find out what was going on. I would drive around CT and NY and be gobsmacked that there were no people. Now I am assuming that there were not 10 million dead bodies lying around. If there were, I might assume a disease or neurotoxin that I somehow missed out on. No bodies and I would probably freak out. Were the Left Behind people right? Were the aliens are watching us people right? Had everyone scurried off somewhere quietly and hidden?
If the Internet could still be accessed (I have a huge generator so I will have power but that doesn't help if Cable is out). I could roam around looking for a live Wi-Fi. I could check libraries for access. At this point I would still be thinking it was a local disturbance (the everyone evacuated theory). I would collect food on my search for information, but over time I was discover: everything just stopped on a certain date, not only was everyone in CT and NY missing, and in the Western Hemisphere, but in the whole world (apparently). I would find a Ham radio and try to find someone on it. It would be a long time with me searching using communications and traveling for me to conclude that I was likely alone. I would still not truly believe it but would believe that a large portion of humanity had disappeared.
While running around and trying to communicate, collecting food and supplies, I would be freeing those animals left behind, zoo animals, domestic animals, pets, they would be on their own to survive, but at least I could open the doors/gates. I would probably keep a little pack of dogs for companionship and protection. The most dangerous predator (man) is gone, but dogs are good to have to discourage four legged predators.
Now, a few weeks have gone by, I am still cruising around in my old diesel 4-wheel drive SUV (1994) because I know it can burn just about any fuel oil, and can go pretty much anywhere off road. I have my 12 ga shotgun, lots of ammo, a small .22 rifle, food, water, camping supplies, medical supplies, dog food, cat food, clothing, lots of hiking boots and socks, shovel, salt,
(92 People Likes) Do conservatives think the minimum wage shouldn't be adjusted for inflation? If so, why?
es reflexively reject any impediment to unfettered functioning of the free market. As such, conservatives oppose any increase minimum wage But, like many arguments founded in ideological bias rather than facts and statistics, this argument i love lucy vitameatavegamin talking doll ounds good, but - it masks a more cynical agenda. Fundamentally, changes in minimum wage are about wealth redistribution. Over the long term, there is some good evidence that increases in the minimum wage benefit everybody. BUT, in the short term, increases in minimum wage benefit “labor” at the expense of “capital”. In other words, these changes benefit MOST everyone. The notable ‘non-beneficiaries’ tend to also be large contributors to conservative causes. And, much like the capital gains tax, inheritance tax and regulations surrounding bank privacy, these contributors are keenly aware that they are advocating an unpopular position. So, they can’t show their cards and admit their true intentions (would you?) - they need to come up with other arguments As a result, their arguments are recast with the reductive power of populist politics and then blasted through established channels of idealogically inspired dogma. Now, we argue about something other than the real issue. The “new” minimum wage argument has been recast away from peer reviewed research and into a slickly manufactured sound bite narrative. Instead of facts, the voter hears an oversimplified ‘thought experiment’ to cause him to conclude he understands the issue. From there, its easy to convince this voter he/she can extrapolate their insight to something that looks like the same problem. But, it’s not - and the same intellectual hubris that was excited to “understand” the one problem prevents us from seeing that it’s not applicable to the other problem. This is the essence of conservative marketing and it’s very effective. Think about the minimum wage argument you hear all the time. “If I ran a business and suddenly, the enactment of a minimum wage caused me to have to pay that worker more money, I’d hire less workers. It sounds like a good argument. Except it offers a simple microeconomic construct to refute a much more nuanced macroeconomic problem. Conveniently ignoring the benefit of favoring labor over capital, of increasing monetary velocity, improved productivity and social mobility (just to name a few…) But, far more importantly, it ignores the facts: The minimum wage is one of the most studied phenomena in all of economics and collective insight is best expressed in Card Kruegers 1993 study Minimum Wages and Employment: A Case Study of the Fast Food Industry in New Jersey and Pennsylvania It’s a comparative study of a single MSA that straddles two states - one which had a minimum wage increase and one that didn’t. It turns out raising the minimum wage didn’t effect employment growth. BUT, it did contribute to better lives for lower income people who benefited from the wage increase. To be clear, this isn’t a “single standalone study” but, the culmination of 50 years of economic research on the topic. That’s the thing about the real scientific process - it’s rarely “revolutionary” - and more often a collection of petty, bickering, arcane studies that support a slow and steady march of progress. Even as a standalone, the study has withheld a series of well-funded and increasingly stupid attacks from the right for one reason: it’s right. (example of problems with most recent “study” The Problems With A New Study On Seattle's $15 Minimum Wage ) Truthfully, I blame the Dems. Instead of using facts to refute an intellectually flawed attack, the Dems promote a story of “hardship at the bottom”. But, by ignoring conservative dishonesty, they unintionally validate it. If voters understood how wealthy interests were co-opting misunderstood policies like minimum wage oppositions to support the largest wealth transfer in history, they might finally recognize those “job creators” for what they are. Instead, the Dems l focus on charity and empathy - both noble ideals. But, entirely inade

(22 People Likes) What country in Europe is the most similar to the United States?
roup of countries that are not very similar to the US at all. The UK shares (or is divided by) a common language with the US and has strong historical connections. But that aside I would say that the UK actually has a lot more in common with most European countries than it does with the US. Politically the UK is very different from the US. Our so called ‘right wing’ Conservative party has hardly anything in common with US conservatives and is actually well to the left of even the Democrats in the US and would certainly be seen as ‘liberal’ in US terms. Our opposition Labour party would probably be seen by most Americans as communist. We also have a constitutional monarchy and all sorts of measures to keep the government of the day in check. It is impossible to imagine somebody like Trump being elected to power in the UK and no UK Prime Minister could get ever away with the abuses of power that Trump does. Religion is another huge difference. The majority of people in the UK would class themselves as having no religion and those that do adhere to a religion largely keep quiet about it. This is also true (often even moreso) in most European countries. This contrasts starkly with the US which stands out as the only developed western country that has such a high degree of religiosity affecting everyday life. In the US an atheist could not hold any senior public office, whereas in the UK it is pretty much the norm. In fact, here we simply do not care whether a person follows a religion or not as long as they do their job properly and keep it to themselves. Declaring your religion publicly or any mention of God is just seen as weird. Then we come Sex Doll o health care and social services. The UK like most European countries has universal health care that is free at the point of use. No matter what health care you need (except oddly dental care) you will not have to pay when you use it and thus will not become financially broken just because you get ill. It is impossible for people here to understand the stance of most Americans when it comes to universal healthcare particularly given that they actually spend more in tax on health care than the UK does. Gun rights is clearly another big difference. People of the UK (and Europe) will never understand the gun loving mentality of Americans. Here only farmers and a few sports enthusiasts own a gun of any sort and they are very strictly controlled. The majority of the population have absolutely no desire to own a gun and are very happy that nobody else has one too. Why any normal citizen would need to own an automatic weapon is a complete mystery to us. Even the police here do not carry guns (though we do have specialist and highly trained armed units that can be on the scene within minutes if required). The police are another difference. The UK police are protectors not enforcers. You can approach any police officer and ask for directions and even have a chat. This is very different in the US. It also seems to us that many, if not most US citizens have very little knowledge or understanding about anything outside the US. Only 40% of US citizens even hold a passport whereas this figure is over 80% in the UK. Europeans as a whole are far more widely traveled and more knowledgeable about world affairs. There are many other differences which I could list which would show we are more similar to our European neighbours than to the US but I have gone on long enough. The most stark difference though, as I mentioned before can be summed up in one word - ‘Trump’. T
